Genre: Shoujo

Coming to its conclusion on English shores, Hana Kimi has run 23 volumes in total, spanning from September 2004 to April 2008. A charming shoujo story that’s spawned two live action television dramas and numerous drama CDs, fans around the world continue to show their love and support for the cross-dressing heroine and her friends.

The premise for Hana Kimi is a simple one: Mizuki Ashiya is a young Japanese girl, living in America, who finds herself attracted to a high jumper, in Japan, named Izumi Sano. Ashiya having admired his passion and free spirit for high jumping, packs up her bags and moves to Japan, disguising herself as a boy to enroll in Sano’s all boy school. Mizuki wished to see Sano high jump in person but was shocked to learn he had quit due to the pressure. Now determined to get him jumping again, Mizuki’s adventures ensue! While there she befriends fellow students, goes through lots of wacky hijinks and gets the lucky break of being Sano’s roommate, all the while trying to keep her secret under wraps (or in her case, a thick denim vest).

Volume two of Fairy Tail continues to mix light-heartedness with some rather dark themes, and does so fairly well. For a very healthy sum, Lucy, Natsu and Happy are on a job to retrieve and destroy a book for Mr. Melon. We get the immediate fan service of Lucy in a French Maid’s outfit but it does serve a purpose: Lucy is trying to get a job as a maid with the man who stole the book in the first place, Duke Everlue.

This review will be relatively short because this manga boils down to one thing: do you like horror short stories? If the answer is no, this manga will disappoint you, because that is what it is essentially. Five short stories connected only by the title character, Ai Enma, who really isn’t all that much of a character. She’s more of a device, really, with no growth from one chapter to the next since none is needed for this sort of manga with each chapter being a stand-alone short story. However, poking around online to find out more about the series to help form my thoughts, I found she might begin to grow a bit as the series develops

I got this to review just after a friend had reviewed it in her journal so I’m hoping not too many of her words end up here, though I have to agree with her about this manga. If you’re offended by the big-boobed scantily dressed shonen female archetype, you can jump ship right here and save yourself time and reading effort. The main character has gravity-defying breasts and a back of iron to hold them and, in spite of that, I still like her.

This story has a curious point-of-view. Rather than using either Kubota or Tokito to tell the tale, it's the journal of the neighbor, Shouta Iizuka, that is used. He’s a young boy (between fourth and fifth grade depending where you are in the volume) who has trouble both at school making friends, and at home with workaholic parents and an emotionally abusive mother.

Wii got Manga!

Posted Sunday, August 3, 2008 at 08:35 PM by Jason

From a recent New York Times news article:

Four of Japan's biggest comic book or 'manga' publishers are coming together to bring digital versions of their magazines to Nintendo's Wii console. The companies, Kadokawa, Kodansha, Shueisha and Shogakukan, have formed a joint venture with a local software house that aims to be the first to bring digital comics to the hit console. The venture, called Librica, was formed in July and will deliver comics through the Wii Ware software channel to users. An Internet connection will be required to use the service.

All in all it's a logical move given the popularity of Nintendo's Wii, which has sold around 6.5M units in Japan alone. That said, the real excitement is yet to come: Librica has already announced that it is considering expanding its efforts out to the portable Nintendo DS. The DS is, by far, the most successful gaming platform out there with some 23M units sold in Japan. It is reasonable to expect that they will indeed expand out to it and equally reasonable to expect the venture will be successful. The question now is, will any of this see our side of the ocean?
